Balenciaga - The 1919 Luxury Fashion Power House Story

            Cristobal Balenciaga

Cristobal Balenciaga was the man who founded Balenciaga. He was born in the Basque Country, Spain. Balenciaga was founded 99 years ago in San Sebastian, Spain and it expanded into branches in Madrid and Barcelona.

Cristobal was forced to close his stores during the Spanish Civil War and relocated to Paris but before the closure of his stores, the fashion house was well known and was been worn by the Spanish Royal Family and the aristocracy.

Cristobal's Balenciaga was known for its square Coat with Sleeves cut in a single piece with the yoke and for other amazing designsand due to this, customers risked their safety during the World War II to travel to Europe just to see Balenciaga's Clothings.

The superb inventiveness of Balenciaga became much more evident during the post War Years. His silhouettes fluidity made him to be able to manipulate the relationship between his clothing and women's bodies and in 1951, The silhouette was totally transformed, with its waist removed and shoulders broadened.

This Original Designer made much contributions during the years after the Wars.

In 1960, Balenciaga designed the wedding dress of Queen Fabiola of Belgium and this was made of ivory duchess satin trimmed with white mink at the collar and the hips.

Balenciaga had several designers who once worked under him and among these designers was the owner of another Strong Fashion House "Givenchy" named after him "Hubert de Givenchy".

The Modern Balenciaga

The rights to Balenciaga was acquired by Jacques Bogart in 1986 and opened a new ready to wear line, "le Dix". Michel Goma designed the first collection in 1987 and he remained in the house of Balenciaga for Five years.

The house went on with new Creative Directors taking over and also been replaced.
